I wonder how many people do what I do - check the Obitury column in the daily paper?
I don't know why I do this, my husband asked me why I was checking it one day. I don't know I said, I guess to see if I know any of them. Is this a morbid thing to do? I don't know, I know it makes me feel sad when I read where some one young or mid-life has passed with still a lot of life that should of been ahead of them. But I have found out when a friend's parent died which enabled me to pay my respects.
In the meantime I am not from around this area being born and raised in the small town of Glassport, I was a city girl, every store was within walking distance, unless you wanted to go to McKeesport which had all the great department stores, but we could walk there also and did so - but not very often, we usually took the streetcar into McKeesport.I lived in Glassport 20 years till I married, it was a thriving town back then with steel mills, the foundry etc. and the town bustled. After I married I lived in Port Vue for 3 years before moving to Springdale. So I lived in my hometown and near my hometown for 23 years, I have lived in Springdale for 44 years! I think this qualifys as my hometown now. So, yes, I would think I would reconize if some one I knew passed away. Glassport has a great web site and lists the dead each week - so I can see if any one I knew passed away.
Glassport will always hold a special place in my heart, but I love this town of Springdale. When we first moved here I did not know what to expect, but right off the bat the neighbors who later became good friends made us feel welcome. It just got better and better as the years passed and our children were born - - through our kids we met a lot more people, got involved in a lot of school activities and sports. Those people are still our friends to this day, but we don't see them as often as we use to. And we were introduced to Glenn's Custard!!!!! Glassport has a small Dairy Queen , a public pool, it use to have a library but no longer - which makes me feel sad BUT they don't have GLENN"S or a library which makes all the difference in the world.
